Rare 18th century Native American birch bark box. Carved out lock-lap fingers, fitted wood top and bottom held with wooden pegs. Leather tab fastened with a hand cut screw on lid. 6 3/4” x 5” x 3 1/4” wide. Super condition. There is a black substance near the top that is very old and dry, possibly from when it was made. This is just the best American, Pilgrim period, thin treen eating dish. Maple or birch. Very dry grungy surface with super patina. Initials “ H S” on back. 7” x 7 1/4” x 1/2” thick, slightly warp as you like to see. Authentic American dishes from this period are very hard to come by now as most are in private collections or museums.

RARE NATIVE AMERICAN HERB CRUSHER PADDLE

This is the first one of these I have owned. It is an 18th century Native American hand carved one piece maple herb crusher paddle. It would have been used with a shallow treen bowl to crush herbs and spices. It measures 6” o/a length with a 4” x 1/4” thick paddle. Very dry surface with super grain.

VERY RARE 18TH C. COPPER TAVERN TABLE EMBER PAN

I have only seen one other table top ember pan like this. This is a very rare 18th century, c.1770-1790, copper and wood ember pan. This was used in taverns and inns to carry and hold hot embers from a fireplace to a table for lighting pipes. A hot coal was removed with a pipe tongs to light the tobacco in the pipe. Original handle with Georgian style turnings and original black ebony paint. 9 1/2” o/a length with a 2 7/8” diameter pan. No issues. Just never seen offered today. This ember pan goes great with the pipe/ashes bowl which is listed below.

RARE PILGRIM ERA STONEWARE TAVERN PIPE/ASHES BOWL

Rare Pilgrim period, c.1690-1740, stoneware tavern pipe and ashes bowl with a thin lead glaze. This would have ben used to hold pipes and their ashes on tavern tables in inns of the period. Complete with attached handle and tall footed base. It has shallow 1” and 1/2” chips on the rim plus the expected wear with age. No cracks. The form is scoop shaped with a mouth for pouring out ash at the front and two shaped corners for pipes. The style is Dutch. These pipe bowls are seen in early Dutch paintings of tavern scenes. 4 1/4” across the handle and the opening is 3 1/2” x 3” and the height is 2 1/4”. Pipe included. This pipe bowl looks great on a tavern table with the ember pan in the previous listing.

MINIATURE 18TH C. FORGED IRON SHOVEL, 8"

Offered is a quite rare forged iron miniature shovel. It could have been used to fill pipe braziers or as a salesman’s sample or children’s piece as suggested by Don Plummer in “Colonial Wrought Iron”. 8 1/8” with a 1 5/8” x 2” shovel. A very desirable Scottish hunting sword or belt dagger with rare to find original scabbard. Blade is grooved, 14 1/4” long, and double edged for 5 1/4” from tip. 19” o/a length. Antler handle with brass end plate. Brass ferrel with a leather piece for scabbard to butt against. C.1740-1780. This is a very rare miniature maple burl bowl having been pole lathe turned with a gouged out inside bottom and a cut sprue on base. The surface has a super patina and color. The miniature bowl is 4” in diameter x 2” tall. Writen in period black ink on the rim are the initials H. O. G. A., possibly the owner, and the date 1774. Very rare to be dated and signed.

I have never seen a mortar & pestle this small. It has a walnut burl mortar that was pole lathe turned with 3 incised lines. The pestle has a rounded end. The m/p could have been used to grind spices, herbs, or medicines. It is only 2 3/8” in diameter x 2 1/4” tall with a 4 1/4” pestle. Dating to early 19th century.

LEATHER COVERED DOC BOX, ROSE HEAD NAILS, 18TH C.

This document box, having a leather cover and super nice wallpaper inside, is one of the best I have owned. It has rose head nails securing the hasp and on the bottom of the box. It is only 12” x 7” x 6” tall and has a domed top. There are hand-tooled designs in the leather all around. The document box has the original leather hinge and white leather trim with brass tacks. C.1750-1780 period. No issues.

Early 18th century, ca.1680-1720, probably English, hand carved hour glass sand timer. Uncommon small size. Measures 4 3/8” tall x 3” diameter ends. The wood is oak. The sand flows through in 15 seconds. Wax and string seal. Wax seals were not used after about mid-18th century to seal the two globes. Rare to find this nice.

REV. WAR ERA CANTEEN IN RARE EGG SHAPE

Rare Rev. War era egg-shaped staved canteen having 2 lap-locked ash bands and 2 forged iron bands on the outside edges. Raised spout with original or early hand carved plug. The staves are quarter sawn white oak. The canteen was made to sit on the flattened base. There are plugged holes on both side near the top where the carrying strap would have been fastened. The strap was moved up to the rim at some point as evidenced by 3 iron nails on each side. Measurements are: 7 1/2” tall x 6 1/2” wide. There is a minor break in one band on the bottom from use wear. The bands are tight and don’t move. Ca. 1750-1800.

Wonderful, museum quality, late 17th century Pilgrim period one-piece American burl maple hand hewn and carved porringer with a handle. Original untouched natural attic surface and patina. Ca. 1670-1700. Would have been used as an eating bowl, mortar, or cup. Unusual crooked handle suggests Native American. Super condition with just one old and very tight surface or stress line in the bowl that is not a crack and it does not go through. 9” long and the bowl is 3 3/4” diameter x 2” deep. REV. WAR ERA BELT AXE, MID-18TH CENTURY

Outstanding early 18th century American forged iron belt axe. The style of the axe head is of the 17th and early 18th centuries having the axe made from an iron bar bent around a removable form to shape the handle’s round eye. The 2 ends of the heated bar were hammered together where they met to create the blade. It has the original handle with a wedge and super patina and color. Very similar examples can be seen in Collector’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution by Neumann and Kravic, p. 24. The handle is 18” and the axe is 4 1/2 x 3 1/4”. No issues. Ca. 1750 - 1780.

Folk art carved bird done in the W. Schimmel style. I believe it was made to sit on a box or shelf edge. 9” long x 2 1/2” wide. It retains its wonderful original paint. The red paint is a little shiny except where it is worn on the breast. One foot is broken but not too noticeable. There is original glue to hold the feet to the stick. Peg lamps were made to be used in candleholders, replacing the more expensive candle with a liquid fuel burner. This peg lamp and brass candleholder are offer together for one price. The peg lamp is pressed glass with a pewter camphene double burner. The lamp has 16 flat panels and is 5” tall x 3 ½” diameter. It is in excellent condition and dates early to mid-19th century. The brass candle stick is probably French. It has very fine engraving and is 4 3/8” tall x 4” diameter base. The candleholder takes a 7/8” candle and the peg lamp fits perfectly. They look great displayed together, as on a lamp stand.

A very rare ash burl early 19th century turned open top spice or seed jar or canister. It has an untouched natural dry surface. The top was formed so that it could be covered with a cheese cloth or linen towel and secured. The burl grain patterns are wonderful with about half showing the pattern from the tangential grain and the rest, including the bottom, has the typical ash burl "eyes". Tin, American, patented, chamber candlestick. The socket of the candleholder is designed with two interlocking projections to make a “saves-all” candle holder which permits burning of a candle stub to its very end. The base is impressed “PAT. This is a not too often found plate warming stand or "cat". It is of English or American origin and made of maple wood. Measurements are 6 ¾” tall x 8” wide. Very skillfully turned legs. This stand is also called a “cat” because of the shape of the legs. No matter which 3 legs it rests on, there are always 3 legs to hold plates for warming on the hearth. C. 1760-1780. This is the first pipe tongs that I have owned of this form. I haven’t been able to find a similar shape in my several reference books on early forged iron. This is a forged iron American pipe tongs, dating to c.1680-1720. It is 15 3/4” long and was hand forged from a single iron rod. Pipe tongs were used in the home and in taverns, inns, and public houses to lift hot coals from a fireplace fire to light a pipe. A wonderful and rare form.
